It has been reported that the Houston Rockets will sign point guard Scott Machado to a partially guaranteed three-year contract. Machado went undrafted in the 2012 NBA Draft after leading the nation in assists with 9.9 a game for Iona. The Rockets had an open spot on the roster after releasing big man Sean Williams.
After struggling in the first game of the NBA Summer League with the Rockets, Machado played very well in the final three games, averaging 11.3 points and 7.3 assists. Machado finished the Summer League averaging 8 points and 5.3 assists.
Scott will have to beat out Courtney Fortson, Shaun Livingston and Toney Douglas to play behind Jeremy Lin as the backup point guard. Training camp will be huge for Machado and where he stands with the team next season. Livingston and Douglas will most likely have first dibs at being the backup, but if they show any signs of struggle, Machado could leap them and take the job. After the performance Fortson put up in the Summer League I don’t think Machado will have to worry about him.
Scott Machado’s statement after playing in the NBA Summer League with the Houston Rockets:
“They know I’m a great passer,” Machado said. “I feel like every day I progressed and got better just getting more comfortable and more used to the style of play and the pace of the game, the players around me.”
