The Houston Rockets have sent Terrence Jones and Scott Machado to the Rio Grande Valley Vipers of the NBA D-League.
Jones has most likely been sent down to get him more playing time and work on his game. He’s been getting very inconsistent playing time with the Rockets due to multiple players being in front of him on the depth chart. So far in his NBA career Jones is averaging 3.6 points and 2 rebounds in 10 minutes a game. He’s played in just 7 of Houston’s games.
I don’t expect Jones to be down for long. Donatas Motiejunas dominated in his two games in the D-Leauge and I personally think Jones is way more NBA ready. This will be a great experience for Terrence and will help his confidence in the long run with more playing time.
Scott Machado being sent down is not surprising with the return of Carlos Delfino. The Rockets have multiple guards and with the recent play of Daequan Cook there looked to be no playing time for a guy like Scott. When Delfino comes back I expect Toney Douglas’ playing time to shrink as well.
If Douglas doesn’t pick it up soon and continues to struggle I could see him being cut, making way for Machado who could play sparingly off the bench.
I believe both of these guys have a future in the NBA. This isn’t a demotion, this is just the grooming period of their careers.
