The Houston Rockets have recalled power forward Donatas Motiejunas from the Rio Grande Valley Vipers of the NBA D-League.
D-Mo has been very impressive in his four games in the Valley, averaging 23.5 points on 51% shooting from the field, 10.8 rebounds and 2.8 assists in 36 minutes a game.
He has struggled a bit with his three-point shooting, but that will come around just like it did for Chandler Parsons this year. Hard work and getting use to the NBA style of play will make Motiejunas a great shooter.
Now that Patrick Patterson is out indefinitely with a bone bruise in his right foot, look for Donatas to try and make an impact off the bench if he ever gets a chance. Most NBA scouts and coaches think his skill-set is definitely NBA ready, but his body is definitely not. He struggles against even the most average big men in the NBA due to their strength. For D-Mo to make an impact and keep a roster spot he needs to be able to bang with the big guys.
Kevin McHale has trouble trusting most rookies. The case will probably be the same with Motiejunas. But at the same time I couldn’t think of a better coach to teach Motiejunas the ropes on both sides of the floor.
We all know that the Rockets are always in trade talks. Donatas could possibly be traded before he ever gets a legitimate chance with Houston. Either way I think D-Mo will become a great player for some team one day, just not this season.
