Jeremy Lin spoke for the first time since teammate Chandler Parsons told the media that the Houston Rockets starting lineup for their season opener would not feature him. While the news came as a surprise to the general public and national media, it wasn’t so much for the team or the local Houston media. Lin stated:
“I have known for awhile so it is not really a surprise for me. I think for me, I am just focused on basketball. You know I, I need to control what I do when I am out there like I said. I feel like I am beating a dead horse with some of the things I’m saying. Controlling what I can control and playing my brand of basketball when I’m out there and doing what’s best for us, for the team and running the second unit to the best of my ability.
I don’t think it is a big deal. Everybody wants to start but only five can. I respect Coach’s decision. When I am out there, I am going to keep playing. Me and Pat(Beverley) will be on the floor together and me and Dwight and me and James and Pat and James – there are all types of lineups. Throughout the course of the game we will see a lot of them.”
I’ve said for a while now that the Rockets are best suited to have Lin come off the bench, as he provides the balance and offensive firepower that is needed in the second unit that any contending team needs. The Rockets struggled with bench production a season ago, and have seemed to find an answer for that.
Patrick Beverley, meanwhile, will get the chance to start at point guard for the first time in his career in a regular season game. His story and journey to the NBA is remarkable as well, just like Lin’s, and he will finally live a dream as a starter in the NBA when he takes the floor against the Charlotte Bobcats Wednesday night.
“I haven’t had the fortune to play in the NBA on opening night,” Beverley said. “This will be my first one. I am definitely excited.”
