Houston Rockets may amnesty Luis Scola

It has been reported that the Houston Rockets could possibly amnesty Luis Scola in a attempt to land Dwight Howard. The amnesty provision allows a team to waive a player and not have his salary count against the salary cap or luxury tax. Luis will still receive his salary for the season if it does come true.

The Rockets are continuing their efforts to get more picks and cap space to go after Dwight. With the the Nets most likely out of the talks and looking to resign Brook Lopez, the Rockets seem to be the front runners in the Dwightmare sweepstakes. The Rockets have the more intriguing assets to offer the Magic.

Scola has played for the Rockets in all 5 of his NBA seasons, but i think it’s time for him to move on. The Rockets have multiple young forwards at his position and this looks to be the passing of the torch so to speak. Scola had a down year last season. He averaged 15.5 points, 6 rebounds and 2 assists in 31 minutes a game. More importantly he was atrocious on the defensive end. I caught him walking a lot on defense. He seemed to forget how to run on the defensive end, but once the Rockets had the ball it looked as if he just remembered how to run again. He may be a fan favorite in Houston, but his lack of effort on defense is unacceptable, and him being basically let go seems fitting in my opinion.

Scola will have multiple teams coming after him this summer. Hopefully he realizes that if he wants major minutes he’s going to have to give some effort on defense. He can still score, but he even got a bit lazy on that end as well, settling for jump shots instead of his signature scoop shot. The Nets, Lakers and other could show some interest.

The Rockets are either going to rebuild or go all in for Howard and try to surround him with anything they possibly can to persuay him to stay. Either way it’s a changing of the guard. I expect Kevin Martin to be dealt with soon.
