Patrick Patterson has a lot of work to do

By Kyle Adams

Patrick has shown strides of being a starter in the NBA, but he has also shown strides of being a career backup, or even an end of the bench player. There seems to be moments on the floor where he picks and chooses when to turn it on and when to turn it off. If he wants to keep his spot on the Rockets he needs to show he can be a consistent player in the rotation.

It’s no secret that the Rockets drafted three guys in the last two seasons who play the same position as Patterson. Terrence Jones, Royce White and Donatas Motiejunas were all impressive in the NBA Summer League just a few weeks ago while Patterson watched from the bench as a spectator. Jones and White can also play the small forward spot, but one or the other will play at the four position. Motiejunas doesn’t have the strength or body to play center anytime soon. Power forward is stacked for the Rockets, and right now Patterson is falling behind.

It’s been said that Patterson has been working harder than ever this offseason to improve his game and take over Luis Scola’s spot in the starting rotation, but while he was in the gym, the kids were getting the spotlight on NBA TV.

Patterson has a nice offensive game, but has a lot to work on. He needs to go up strong on putbacks and when he’s down low. He has the tendency to put up floaters over his defender instead of going up strong. He runs towards the basket like he’s going to make a dominating move, but then puts up this weak one handed shot that never goes in. Patterson has a lot of strength, but never uses it. He has a decent shot from 10-15 feet, which is nice to have, but you need your big men to bang with the big boys down low to get easier looks and higher percentage shots.

Patterson has taken to many pointers from Scola. Playing a similar old man style of game when he’s still very young in the league. Patterson needs to give more of an effort on the defensive end and in the post offensively. Stop playing this lazy game. We all know he has the potential to be a good player in this league. He just needs to start putting it all together quickly before it’s to late.
