Olympic Basketball 2012: Team USA takes home the Gold

Team USA is bringing back the Gold Medal for the 14th time in Olympic history. I said from day one this team would not lose a game. They had a couple of close battles, including the Gold Medal game, but at the end of the day they walked out with the win and made America proud once again.

What a year for LeBron James. After hearing a lot of criticism since taking his talents to South Beach, LeBron has won a NBA Championship and a Gold Medal all in the same year. I was one of his biggest critics, but now my mouth is shut after having one of the greatest seasons a basketball player can ever accomplish. King James has done it all in the Olympics. Today was no different after he scored 19 points, grabbed 7 rebounds and dished out 4 assists. He was also a catalyst on defense with his 2 steals. The guy is a true champion, and no one can ever take that away from him.

The definite MVP of the Gold Medal game was Kevin Durant. He played 38 of the possible 40 minutes. He shot 8-18 from the field, 5-13 from three and 9-10 from the free throw line. He finished the night with 30 points, 9 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal and 1 block. His 30 points was one of the highest scoring nights in USA Basketball history. He may have lost to LeBron in the Finals this season, but he is going home with Gold. At only 23 years old, this kid has many great years ahead of him.

Kobe Bryant gets to hang up another Gold Medal in his already stacked trophy case. The man that has done it all in his basketball career more than once. What can you say about Kobe that doesn’t start with the word “champion.” Kobe was the old man on the team. The first few games he let the younger players take over the games as he stood in the back being the leader that he is. Once it got to the medal rounds the Black Mamba arrived. He scored 17 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 block. One of the greatest players in NBA and Olympic history most likely played in his last Olympic game. What a way to go out.

Spain was no easy walk. The game was close from start to finish. Pau Gasol showed he’s still one of the better players in the NBA after flirting with a triple-double. He finished just shy with 24 points, 8 rebounds and 7 assists. At the end of the day Team USA was to much for Spain to handle. Their country should be very proud of the effort they played with.

I still don’t think this team could hang with the Dream Team, but i do think they’re the second best team ever assembled. They accomplished what they’ve been working so hard on, Gold. The Olympics are over and now it’s time to take a break and get ready for next season when the Los Angeles Lakers are crowned NBA Champions. You heard it here first.
