The Journey to even get this far has been a long road for Royce White and the Houston Rockets. At this point him just stepping on the court is a positive thing. As of right now he’s slowly heading in the right direction.
Just like Royce’s journey, I’ve been up and down about him as a person and a player. I do believe he has all the talent in the world, but I have been critical of him as a person. I do understand his mental health issues, but I thought at times he was milking the situation to benefit himself and through the Rockets organization under the bus. Finally, all of this is behind him and we can all focus on his basketball career.
After the Rockets and Royce came to an agreement he was sent down to their NBA D-League affiliate, the Rio Grande Valley Vipers. He has shown flashes of the player he can be but he has also shown flashes of the person he can be by being ejected from two games already.
So far in 9 games with the Vipers he has started 5 times and is averaging 8 points, 5.6 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 1 steal and 1 block in 25 minutes. He’s shooting 37% from the field and 60% from the line.
He’s the type of player that does it all. He should never be based on just scoring alone. His passing and ball handling are similar to a top-notch point guard but his body type is of a forward. He can rebound with the bigs and keep up with the small forwards. He may never do anything great but he will be good at everything. Any team would love a weapon like that.
Royce still has a long road ahead of him, but at least he’s going in the right direction.
