Houston Rockets head coach Kevin McHale missed his second straight day of practice Wednesday for personal and family reasons, according to the organization. His status for Thursday night’s game against the Portland Trail Blazers is unknown at the moment.

The game in Portland kicks off a western road trip that will also include a trip to Oakland to play the Golden State Warriors Friday night, and then the Sacramento Kings on Sunday evening.

Assistant coach Kelvin Sampson will assume coaching duties if McHale is unable to go. Sampson filled in as the acting coach last season when McHale took a leave of absence following the death of his daughter, Sasha.

Jenny Dial Creech of the Houston Chronicle first reported the news.

As of late Wednesday afternoon, the Rockets announced that McHale’s mother, Josephine, passed away Tuesday at the age of 86.  Her funeral has been arranged for Friday morning in Minnesota.
