The Houston Rockets announced Thursday that they have waived forward/center Greg Smith, and signed free agent center Dexter Pittman for the remainder of the season.

After averaging 6 points and 4.6 rebounds in 70 games a season ago, Smith has been unable to recover from a knee injury he suffered in November, and has appeared in just 11 games this season, averaging 3.5 points and 2.5 rebounds.

The Rockets needed depth at the center spot with the recent injury to Dwight Howard, and Smith’s health was too much in question as the playoffs quickly approach.

Pittman stands at 6-11, 308 pounds, and is eligible for postseason play, as he was not signed by any NBA team this season. The former University of Texas standout has bounced around the NBA and D-League after being drafted in the 2nd round by the Miami Heat in 2010.

In 50 games played for his career, Pittman is averaging 2.3 points and 1.8 rebounds.
