Patrick Beverley has already been noted to be a premier defender in his short NBA career thus far. Bev had some words about how he handles defensive possessions.
BBallBreakdown interviewed Beverley about full court defense, and Bev said he prefers the slide, and it requires a lot of work in the offseason to get to that point.
Beverley adds that when he is in pick and rolls he is looking first at what the big man is doing, and mentions his aggressiveness in coming off the pick. He says offensively he attacks the big man to try to make the play for himself or a teammate.
Beverley said of help-side defense that he is careful switching onto other defenders when closer on a pass. He says he likes to stay in on the defender and close out the pass so that the corner can be defended. It’s an interesting interview with a player on defensive strategies that other players can relate well to. Beverley is a good guard for young players to watch and learn from. Maybe “The Professor” is too, but that’s a tangent for another day.
