Houston Rocket Recap: On a night when James Harden’s shot wasn’t falling Dwight Howard absolutely dominated the boards and Josh Smith appeared to be finally clicking on both ends.

Houston led by one point at the half, but they appeared to step on the gas in the fourth quarter wearing down Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love. We look at how each Houston player fared in the game in our player grades:

THE STARTERS

B.
Harden had more free throws in the first half than the entire game versus Chicago. His shot was off all night (6-18). The positive was he contributed elsewhere by providing 6 assists, 6 rebounds and a steal. By game end he was close to a triple-double registering 21 points, 7 rebounds and 9 assists. It’s an interesting statement on how good Harden is when that stat line isn’t worth an A!
. SG. Rockets. JAMES HARDEN

Rockets. PATRICK BEVERLEY. C.

Beverley certainly didn’t do much to stop Irving as he scored 23 points on 9-11 in the first half! Wasn’t a stellar night for the point guard given how well Irving did, but then again everyone has issues with Irving when he’s got his outside shot falling
. PG

B-.

I called for it in the pregame that Trevor Ariza was DUE to have a break out game. His 13 points and 4 steals by the half were a very welcome (and overdue) necessity. They need Ariza to be hitting so the starters can spread the floor better. Odd night for him given he didn’t score at all in the second half, however he did seem to wear down Kyrie Irving when he was moved onto him.
. SF. Rockets. TREVOR ARIZA

Pretty anemic first half with just 2 points. Seemed to be mishandling the ball a lot which I’m not sure is a result of good defense or him rushing his game. On the other hand holding Kevin Love to 2 points in the first half might earn him a pass on the offense.

Made a great behind the back pass in the lane to Howard who turned it into a slam dunk plus a free throw. Played with a lot more energy in the second half and at times makes me feel like he’s more reliable in close than Dwight was in the game. But when Howard took over in the fourth I feel silly even thinking that.
