Houston Rockets Bring Back Chuck Hayes After 4 Seasons

Chuck Hayes Returns to the Houston Rockets

Four seasons later the Rockets have once again acquired power forward/center Chuck Hayes. Yahoo Sports’ Marc J. Spears reports the Rockets signed Hayes to a one-year deal at the veterans minimum.

The Rockets have agreed to terms with free agent center Chuck Hayes on a one-year veteran's minimum deal, sources told Yahoo Sports.

Hayes was never a “finesse” player in his years in Houston, in fact he had Tracy McGrady there to fill that role. Luckily, years later, the Rockets have another superstar that can handle the load in James Harden. Hayes averaged 4.4 PPG in his six years in Clutch City, to go along with 5.8 RPG and a whole lot of hustle.

The “Chuck-wagon” will help bolster the front-court with Dwight Howard and Clint Capela as the only centers listed. Terrence Jones, Donatas Motiejunas and presumably Montrezl Harrell, whenever he signs, will hold down the power forward spot for Kevin McHale‘s Rockets.

Hayes’ numbers regressed in every category since joining the Kings in 2011. Being back in Houston could really help his confidence and get him back into the player he use to be from 2005 to 2010.

If there is one negative in this deal then yes, he still shoots his free throws with the pause:

The veteran’s minimum is a little under $1.5 million, so Hayes will be making a lot less money than he has the last four years in Sacramento and Toronto. Safe to say he will be able to live comfortably, unlike other players who think they’ll “struggle” under the veteran’s minimum. Now he is on a legitimate team that can really make noise during the post-season as he brings his career to a close.
