At age 37, Jason “The Jet” Terry is long past his prime. Still, even with his advancing age, Terry has something to contribute to an NBA roster as he demonstrated last year as a member of the injury plagued Rockets.

With an injury to starting point guard Patrick Beverley, Terry played a considerable amount of minutes for the rockets during the playoffs, and though his skill level did not match his days as 6th man of the year, in many ways he exceeded most people’s expectations, offering the Rockets a much needed offensive spark.

During the regular season, where he did not receive as much playing time, Terry was a source of veteran leadership who orchestrated an important meeting between Rockets superstars James Harden and Dwight Howard in order to discuss the two players’ roles once Howard made his return. With the Rockets acquiring Ty Lawson, and with the return of Patrick Beverley, Terry, if he chooses to return, will see limited action next year, but his leadership and experience remain a valuable asset for the Rockets.

Why the veteran point guard sees New Orleans’ offer as superior to the Rockets offer remains a mystery since New Orleans is unable to pay him more than Houston. It it is possible, however, that New Orleans is offering Terry a two-year veteran minimum deal where Houston may be only offering Terry a partial guaranteed one-year deal.

After losing to the Golden State Warriors in the Western Conference Finals, Terry told the Houston Chronicle, “I want another opportunity to fight for a championship and Houston right now is the best fit for me”. Money aside, both parties would benefit if Terry chooses to return. His experience and leadership are beyond value on a title-contending roster.
