Tamberlyn’s Olympic Team:

LeBron James

  1. Chris Paul
  2. Kevin Durant
  3. Stephen Curry
  4. Russell Westbrook
  5. James Harden
  6. Anthony Davis
  7. Klay Thompson
  8. Dwight Howard*
  9. Draymond Green*
  10. Kawhi Leonard*
  11. DeMarcus Cousins*

Basically my team omits players I feel will most likely make the team such as Anthony, Irving, Love and Griffin. My additions of Howard, Cousins, Leonard and Green address 2 specific issues: defense and size up front.

Certainly Love offers three-point shooting and can spread the floor but you would get that with Green who can also defend and offers copious intangibles. The reason I’d add Kawhi Leonard is his ability to defend multiple positions, his fundamentals and I can’t imagine the team not having at least one player from the Spurs on it given their team basketball focus.

As for Howard and Cousins my feeling is this squad would benefit from having more big men especially when they face squads like Spain and other teams who’ll have large teams to contend with. I’m not confident Love and Griffin would be able to provide enough defense to stop those countries.

At the end of the day it may come down to who has the most pull on the National Team. If James and Paul are the players who have Colangelo’s ear I anticipate Love, Irving, Anthony and Griffin will all make the squad.

Personally, I think they are taking a chance bringing 4 point guards and not enough size or defensive players. James is as good as any point guard at distributing the ball and if you recall it was Westbrook and Iguodala who often made the difference in games in London. In Spain the Gold Medal may not have transpired if it hadn’t been for Cousins who single handedly stopped a run by Serbia.

With ten months to ponder who’ll form the formidable U.S. 12 man squad there is ample time for us to speculate who the final roster will be comprised of. We would love to hear your thoughts and arguments on what you think will determine the final roster and which 12 players you would select if you were tasked with this mission.
