During the US. National Team Showcase in Vegas reporter Marc Stein interviewed Dwight Howard who was on the sidelines watching the game. Howard spoke specifically about his hopes to join the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team as well as his hopes for the Houston Rockets to win the Championship this coming season:
Stein: Dwight, we see you here in uniform tonight, we’ve seen you on the practice floor this week, how tempted were you to get out there and play?
Howard: I wasn’t tempted at all I’m just here to watch these young fellas play. I’m loving what I’m seeing from these young guys. You know Andre Drummond and Boogie Cousins and all these guys are becoming great players in this league and it’s fun to watch them grow. So, I’m just having a great time out here with all the guys. I remember being here in the 2008 for the Olympics and it was just a great experience
Stein: You were supposed to play in the 2012 team as well and you had to have back surgery. How much lobbying have you done this week with coach K, with Jerry Colangelo to try to get a spot on the 2016 team?
Howard: Well I think the way I can get on the team is how I perform next season. That’s the only thing that really matters. You know this mini-camp was just for all of us to get together to talk about what we need to do to win a gold medal again. I’m excited about the opportunity, I’m thankful to be able to represent my country. I would love to get another gold medal, so that would be great.
Stein: The Rockets just went to the Conference Finals in the West, you added Ty Lawson in the off season, but you’re still in the Western Conference which isn’t getting any easier. What do you see as the ceiling for the Rockets this coming season?
Howard: Just hopefully we can get better, continue to play and next year try to win a title.
Based on this interview I’d say it’s safe to assume Howard plans on having a solid, healthy season as he assumes his chances to make the Olympic team depend on his production this season with his NBA Team. As for his hopes of winning a championship, we know it will be a battle given the depth of the West, but it’s good to know his focus is Houston Rockets first and foremost.
