Marc J. Spears is reporting the Houston Rockets and General Manager Daryl Morey have offered a term of three years to the 32nd pick of this past summers draft. The news is coming quick and furious and as of writing Spears has updated his earlier tweet to say Harrell has agreed in principle to the 3-year deal. No other terms have been released, however we will update as it is reported.

The Rockets currently have 13 players locked into contracts with Montrezl Harrell and 3 others still on non-guaranteed contracts.

Obviously, there is also urgency to handle the rookie extension contracts of Terrence Jones and Donatas Motiejunas. The danger currently is Houston is perilously close to going over the cap which would mean the team would pay luxury tax.

Harrell offers tenacity, solid rebounding and a non stop motor. Many viewed him as a steal at the 32 pick given his ceiling. His numbers in Louisville last season were significant as he averaged 15.7 points, 9.2 rebounds, 1.4 assists and shot 56.6% from the field.

Harrell also posted 33 steals and 42 blocks in the 35 games he played in this past season (his third) in Louisville.

Like Dwight Howard his free throw shooting is sub par as he shoots worse at 53.3% from the free throw stripe than he does from the field. Not to beat a dead horse, but again this highlights the need to get a shooting coach on staff to work on shooting mechanics.

If Morey can finalize Harrell’s contract presumably the rookie extension contracts for Jones and Motiejunas become a priority as will filling the final roster spot.

It’s been quite a 24 hour period for Montrezl Harrell what with his heroics in Louisville yesterday and now news he is on the cusp of signing his first professional NBA contract.
