Q9: Who will have a bigger impact this season McDaniels, or Capela and why?

Andre: This is a tough one. I expect great things for both. This year Capela will be the immediate replacement for Dwight Howard, so I anticipate huge leaps in his game. After a strong showing in the playoffs I believe coach McHale now has enough faith on the young center to spend some more time inside the court and likewise maybe design some plays for him. I’m also looking forward to see McDaniels slashing defenses right and left, but my money is on Capela this year.

Anthony: Definitely Capela… or at least I hope so. And it’s not because one has more potential than the other it’s just if Houston wants any shot at a finals appearance Dwight is going to have to rest a good amount of games. This opens up more playing time for Capela.

Coty: I think K.J. McDaniels will have a bigger impact this season than Clint Capela. Before the Rockets acquired him in a trade, McDaniels was becoming a solid NBA player averaging 9.2 points per game for the Philadelphia 76ers. Since he will have a full training camp with the Rockets, I think Kevin McHale will find a way to get McDaniels into the rotation. Even though he had a good rookie season, I do not think Clint Capela will get any playing time this season. The Rockets are kind of deep at the center/forward position.

  • Eric: I think Clint Capela will have a bigger impact this season for several reasons. First, Capela demonstrated his talents and potential in the playoffs last season, which I believe will benefit him a lot. Second, Dwight Howard is sure to have his minutes limited, and Terrence Jones and Donatas Motiejunas are coming off seasons struck by injuries. By default, I believe there will be more playing time available in the front court for Capela to take advantage of. It is just harder for me to see McDaniels cutting out consistent minutes in a back court filled with Harden, Thornton, Trevor Ariza, and Brewer (players that don’t usually get injured)

James: I want to say McDaniels will have a bigger impact, but after the season Capela had last season, coupled by the fact that DeMo will be dealing with injury issues to start the season, Capela will likely have a bigger impact for the Rockets this season. Ideally, both prospects shine and make it hard for the coach to leave them on the bench.

John: From a pure statistics standpoint the answer is McDaniels. Although Capela doesn’t have any numbers that jump off that page positively, he is D12s backup and will be called upon to play valuable minutes when Howard is in foul trouble or nursing an injury. Hopefully his impact can be a good one, but good or bad Capela will have a bigger impact on this Season.

Joshua: It’s hard to say because we didn’t get to see McDaniels get a lot of playing time as a Rocket last season. That being said, Capela played like a stud for someone who only played a few minutes in a few games before being asked to play an important role on a playoff roster. During last season’s playoff run, Capela didn’t look like a rookie, and with a second season under his belt, and more time to play with the rest of the squad, I look forward to watching Capela put people on highlight reels.

Trey: Capela will have the bigger role and impact this year. McDaniels is still too deep on the depth chart, but Capela will back-up Dwight with Motiejunas and TJ healthy soon.

Tamberlyn: Capela definitely will get the better opportunity given he will be the first off the bench at center until Motiejunas returns and even then DeMo could play PF. This season Capela needs to demonstrate growth and with teams now more aware of him can he continue to ascend (grow his production). Ultimately, the Rockets will be satisfied if Capela rebounds and protects the rim because they are loaded offensively. Still, I’m high on McDaniels who I feel may end up forcing McHale’s hand if he developed this summer. Following practice he said he worked on his ball handling, decision making and his outside shot. If he improved all those pieces how do you keep him off the court?
