The Houston Rockets took to the court in Memphis for their first preseason game, ultimately coming up just short of the win.

Losing a preseason game isn’t the end of the world since this time is meant for tweaking various schemes in preparation for the regular season. Notably we see players grabbing at their shorts which is the biggest sign of conditioning not being on point yet, though it certainly looked like Corey Brewer and Trevor Ariza were on point.

Preseason is also where head coach Kevin McHale will utilize different line-ups to observe chemistry, potential line-up options and to gauge player growth as well as determine their playing time.  Specifically, McHale will observe the 5 players vying for the 15th roster spot, but he’ll also be watching players like the rookies and K.J. McDaniels to decipher where they fit and where they should be assigned (on the varsity team or with the D-League).
