The good news is that Houston Rockets basketball is set to start back up tonight as the Rockets open their season at home against the Denver Nuggets. The bad news is that the Rockets first stretch of games look to be tough.
After their season opener against Denver, the Rockets are set to play the Golden State Warriors, a healthy Miami Heat, and the Oklahoma City Thunder— the last game falling on the second night of a back-to-back. From there, they have what should be two easy games against the Orlando Magic and Sacramento Kings before playing the Los Angeles Clippers in another game that falls on the second night of a back-to-back.
All of that happens within the first week and a half of the Rockets’ season. The stretch of games from when the Rockets play the Golden State Warriors to when they take on the Los Angeles Clippers takes place within a span of nine days.
The Rockets will have their work cut out for them from the start. In a ruthless Western Conference, the last thing they want to do is start the season with a losing schedule. The good thing is that the Rockets have brought back most of last season’s line up, so early season chemistry issues shouldn’t be a problem as it has been in the past.
Unfortunately, the Rockets schedule doesn’t get much easier. To be honest, the Rockets first week of games is indicative of their entire regular season schedule. Despite the NBA’s effort to cut down back-to-backs, with the league average dropping from 19.6 last season to 17.3 this season, the Rockets season schedule will feature 20 back-to-backs. That means 40 of the Rockets 82 games will be part of a back-to-back effort.
The Rockets have championship aspirations. They also have one of the toughest schedules in the league. As the Rockets found out last season, the road to the NBA finals is no easy task. With the regular season set to begin tonight, lets hope the Rockets find a way to get off to a fast start.
