There are many NBA players active in Rio at the Olympics, but former Houston Rockets player Luis Scola may have received the greatest honor so far.
This past weekend the Rio Olympics basketball tournament began on Saturday with current Houston Rockets rookie Zhou Qi playing Saturday. But it was the opening ceremonies which saw a former player receive the greatest honor.
Luis Scola who played with the Rockets for five seasons from 2007-08 through to 2011-12 was the man of the hour for Argentina as he led his entire team into Olympic stadium carrying the flag.
Scola who played the past season with the Toronto Raptors signed with the Brooklyn Nets in free agency this summer. He along with Manu Ginobili represent the elder statesmen for the Argentinian basketball team. This is Scola’s fourth time representing his country.
He began playing with the national team in 1998 and is heralded by many the program a s the man who kept the Nation’s program alive through lean years when Ginobili couldn’t play or was injured.
Of his previous 3 trips to the Olympics the first in 2004 resulted in a gold medal followed by a bronze medal in 2008. The team also captured a silver medal in the 2002 World Championships under his reign.
To cap this in what is likely his final trip to the Olympics will provide him with a nifty bow to wrap up his tenure with the Argentinian team. Though some on Twitter were quick to question the move to make him the country’s flag bearer it’s important to note his commitment to the National team has never wavered with him playing year in and year out through the summers even on team’s without the talent to win.
Congratulations to Luis Scola, one of the nicest guys to ever wear a Houston Rockets jersey.
