The Houston Rockets have had an active offseason so far, including signing two backup centers.
Nene Hilario is coming back to the Houston Rockets, and it is the steal of the summer. The team locked him up for 3 years and just under $11 million. While the Rockets were focused on getting him back on the team, they also needed to find another center for the team. In comes Tarik Black. The Rockets signed their former 2014 Summer League standout to a 1-year deal worth around $3 million. With Black and Nene getting similar money, how will the minutes be distributed?

For Nene, he will likely have a similar role to last season. He will be the backup for Clint Capela and will play solid offense and defense. One new thing for Nene is that he will be playing with either Chris Paul or James Harden at all times, so look for him to improve solely because of that. However, Nene is getting older. He will likely need to rest a few more games than he did last season, especially after ending last year with an injury. That’s where Tarik Black comes into the picture.
Tarik Black will have a role similar to the one that Montrezl Harrell had last season. Black will be the primary backup center in games that Nene rests. With Nene likely to miss more games due to rest this year, Tarik Black will possibly play more than Trez did near the end of the year. The Rockets will have plenty of depth in case of an injury (knocks on wood).
In case you need a refresher or just want to look at highlights, here is what Tarik Black’s playing style is like:
As the Lakers announcer said, he is certainly an “energizer bunny.” Black plays with hustle and has great athleticism.
