Morey speaks

On Monday, Rockets GM Daryl Morey spoke publicly about the contract situation regarding MDA with The Athletic’s Sam Amick (subscription required) and offered a much different account than what’s been circulating.

“I don’t want to go into any specifics, but I think that there’s not much needed (in terms of his contract),” Morey told The Athletic. “That’s not always the case with everything during this (sort of) time. But in this case, I think things are pretty straightforward.

It goes without saying but that doesn’t sound remotely close to anything indicating that the two sides were so far apart that the contract talks couldn’t be salvaged. In fact, Morey is stating the exact opposite here, which shouldn’t be surprising for anyone who has been following this situation.

Morey’s comment takes us back to the aforementioned comments he’s been making all along which have been an endorsement for D’Antoni. Morey spoke about his consistent and continued comments that didn’t reflect a desire to make a coaching change during his interview with Amick.

Added Morey: “I think we’ve been pretty consistent. Mike’s a great coach. He’s a great fit for everything we do, and we’re going to sit down after the year and that’s the plan, so we’ll figure it out then. But everything’s really positive, and we feel good about things.”
