How Stephen Silas’ will get the best out of the Rockets

With training camp set to begin, the Houston Rockets need to integrate Stephen Silas’ offensive philosophy to hit the ground running in a make or break season.

Houston Rockets‘ new head coach Stephen Silas won’t have a traditional offseason to get his offense ready to roll. With training camp set to begin tomorrow, the Rockets will have only three weeks to get game-ready while integrating new players and a new offensive system.

There is optimism that the changes Silas will implement will make the Rockets’ offense one of the league’s best.  As a member of the Dallas Mavericks’ staff last season, he helped the team post the league’s best offensive rating and was brought in to replicate that success in Houston.

While the Mavericks had Luka Doncic pulling the strings on offense, the Rockets have James Harden and Russell Westbrook as their offensive maestros. The future of the franchise rests in their hands but that doesn’t mean they need to go it alone.

The Rockets finished dead last in their usage of the pick and roll last season but they led the league by a mile in their usage of isolation plays. With the additions of Christian Wood and DeMarcus Cousins to beef up the front-court and Silas’ experience running roughshod over opponents with the pick and roll don’t expect the Rockets stars to play in isolation anymore.

Stephen Silas will get the Rockets “pick’n-roll’n” through opponents, while also toning down the number of isolation attempts. The offensive changes could lead some notable Rockets to have their best season ever.
