The Houston Rockets used the 2022 NBA Draft to stock up on forwards. They took Jabari Smith with the third overall pick and Tari Eason with the 17th pick to join Jae’Sean Tate and Kenyon Martin Jr. However, as the NBA Finals showed everyone, you can never have too many forwards.
The Rockets don’t have cap space to throw around, but with Eric Gordon’s deal possibly on the move in a trade or sign-and-trade, they have options. Miles Bridges was originally going to be a part of this post, but after his arrest for felony domestic violence, he was removed. The Rockets, under no circumstance, should look to sign him until the matter is resolved.
Forwards are some of the most valuable players, and as positions continue to blur, the forward position has evolved to become one of the most difficult positions to fill. Power forwards either have to be able to moonlight as centers on defense or be capable of defending guards, and small forwards are expected to check one through four.
Finding four players capable of playing across the spectrum of the forward position is no easy task. The Rockets have a solid core of forwards, but adding one or two more players in free agency to round out their rotation would be a welcome addition. For as much promise as Jabari Smith and Tari Eason have, they’re still rookies.
