Clint Capela enters this season with the Houston Rockets with an opportunity to make a mark as the starting center in the NBA.
As Clint Capela enters his third season in Houston the Rockets center continues his gradual climb and increased playing time each year. His rookie season he played more game in the post season than the regular season.
Last year many expected he’d gain more minutes. Initially the Rockets flirted with utilizing both Dwight Howard and Capela on the court at the same time. The problem with having them on the court together is it shrunk the floor as neither have range or consistency hitting shots outside of close range to the bucket.
Moving forward, with Howard gone Capela will be given ample opportunity to shine and with the acquisition of Ryan Anderson the Rockets will be able to space the court.
Looking back at last season Capela played in 77 games averaging 7.0 points and 6.4 rebounds in 19.1 minutes per game. He scored 10-19 points on 20 occasions, and grabbed over 10 rebounds on 18 occasions.
He had several highlight games during the season:
On November 6th versus Sacramento he posted a line of 13 points, 12 rebounds, 2 assists and 4 blocks:
On November 21 versus the Knicks he registered 16 points, 14 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 steal:
In his second game against New York he scored 18 points, and added 11 rebounds, 3 steals and a a block.
On December 29 facing the Atlanta Hawks he notched 17 points, 10 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals and 1 block:
And on January 20th Capela proved his enjoyment of facing bigs when he had another strong game facing Andre Drummond’s Pistons. Posting another double-double of 10 points and 13 rebounds with 1 steal and 1 block.
Though the Rockets have shored up their center back-up position with Nene Hilario the starting job and how minutes Capela plays will rely entirely on him. Based on a conversation he had while in Vegas to watch the Rockets Summer League team, he expects to take full advantage of that.
