2. Wesley Mathews

Rockets fans know Wesley Mathews from his days with the Portland Trail Blazers. During his time with the Blazers, Mathews was the quintessential 3-and-D player.

A great defender with good size, Mathews defended James Harden probably better than any other league player. Up until the 2014-15 season, Mathews was also an above-average 3-point shooter.

On March 5th, 2015, the 26-year-old shooting guard suffered a torn Achilles in a game versus the Dallas Mavericks. Mathews was actually able to come back to start the following season, but his shooting and the overall defense suffered.

Mathews’ field goal percentage and points per game all dropped after the injury.

Mathews, who recently signed with the Los Angles Lakers, is still a good defender and an average 3-point shooter. Still, the injury took a toll on his defense to where he went from a lockdown defender to an above-average player on the defensive end.
