The Rockets are off to an electric start this season and just took down the beast that is Victor Wembanyama thanks to an incredible clutch block by Amen Thompson. Thompson's jaw-dropping reaction was the cherry on top, but his entire performance in the game showcased a very special player that arguably hasn't been seen before in NBA history.

Thompson is adding incredible skills as a scorer and playmaker (even including one three-pointer in each of the Rockets' two games so far) to his elite athleticism. The result is a complete package that has only been seen in superstars before. And Thompson is arguably even a step above any other player who has ever reached these heights.

Amen Thompson is entering unprecedented territory

Through two games, Thompson's season averages are preposterous. He's putting up 18 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists per game while shooting 56% from the field and 50% from three. Those counting stats would probably look even better if he had to push harder in the season opener, but the Rockets got some big performances from others and blew out the Mavericks.

Even beyond the stats, it's clear that Thompson has achieved another level offensively in his improved processing. He's looked much more comfortable operating in any role, whether it's handling the ball, slashing to the rim, or being a screen-setter. Last season was rough for him as a de facto point guard, but it gave him the experience to be great now.

Since Thompson can now pick his spots on offense better, he's also had a lot of energy to contribute on defense. He's the biggest factor in executing the Rockets' top-notch defensive schemes thanks to his energy and versatility. He's averaging 1.5 steals and 1.0 blocks per game so far, but his impact goes even further. Thompson forces a lot of misses and errant passes to his teammates that don't show up for him on the basic stat sheet.

The sky is the limit for Thompson's growth

Everyone's always known Thompson was capable of becoming an All-Star one day, but the Rockets might have been extra sure. Their commitment to him with a 5-year/$208 million contract extension this offseason showed as much. But even the front office might be surprised to see how quickly Thompson is proving them right.

He's been a perfect Swiss army knife so far that truly lifts up all his teammates, regardless of their own skillsets. Even Alperen Sengun, whose fit with Thompson has always been questioned, is thriving next to him. Both young stars are capable playmakers and finishers, so they've been able to get around spacing concerns with great cutting and chemistry.

The Rockets' ceiling, both this season and in the future, will depend on Thompson's growth. If the first two games are any indication, Houston has every reason to remain optimistic and hope he can lead them to deep playoff runs.
