Bruce Thornton is ready to impact the Rockets as soon as possible

The 2026-27 NBA Media Day for the Houston Rockets provided a lot of new looks, new thoughts, and more questions about what is to come. There are a lot of established players to discuss, but it was nice to see recent draft pick Bruce Thornton get some time in the sun.

Thornton was the 31st pick in this past draft; he is also the all-time leading scorer for Ohio State after his stint there. He will have a solid veteran presence this season to build his game off of, with players like Fred VanVleet and Kevin Durant in the locker room.

Thornton should provide a steady hand in an important role

As a second-round pick, on a team that is loaded with defensive talent, Thornton is coming into a situation where all he needs to do is be a reliable scorer when he gets playing time. It's safe to say that Rockets fans have been frustrated with their team's point guard depth and rotations in recent seasons, so Thornton will have fairly low expectations as a rookie.

As a prospect, he seems happy with where he is; seeing players like Durant in person, even with the potential lingering threat of free agency, and getting around the city has him pumped up for what is to come. Obviously, the playing time will probably be scarce for now, but Thornton has the right attitude and skillset to make an impact for the Rockets this season.

Thornton’s growth since the draft is evident

In the Summer League, Thornton averaged 18.6 points, 4.4 assists, and 4.6 rebounds. The talent is there, and hopefully he'll have a chance to showcase it, whether that be on the end of the bench to start or maybe some time in the G League first. A big part of his Summer League performances was shooting 40% from the three-point line, something the Rockets are desperately in need of.

At the end of the day, I like what he has to offer. He seems excited to be here and has looked like a prospect with skill worth giving a chance to. While I would like to delve into a season projection, I stand by that it makes the most sense for him to spend time in the G League with the Rio Grande Valley Vipers. This Rockets team has plenty of talented players with high ambitions to start the season, and it'll be hard to find minutes for a rookie right away.
