The Houston Rockets reunited with Clint Capela this summer. On Media Day, he told the world that he'll be able to function alongside Alperen Sengun.
It's been a burning question for Rockets fans. Most of them were excited to see Capela back in Rockets red from a sentimental perspective. From a practical point of view, it was different. Was Capela the right addition with Alperen Sengun and Steven Adams on the squad?
With Capela's words on media day, his fit with the squad became a bit clearer.
Rockets signee is ready to fit in with the squad
"The double big thing is something I'm excited to be a part of."
- Clint Capela
That's a relief. It's encouraging that Capela is in the right headspace. If he were unwilling to play alongside other big men, there'd be no justifying his acquisition.
Now, the logic is crystallized. Capela is here to play when Steven Adams can't. Given Adams' durability concerns, that will happen regularly. Even if Adams is ready to suit up, the Rockets will sometimes opt to let him rest and put Capela in.
So, those words brought some relief. That said, Capela's willingness to play in double-big lineups is only half the battle. He has to be able as well.
Should Rockets fans be optimistic?
Rockets will lean on double big lineups again
In some respects, that question doubles (pun intended) back to Alperen Sengun. Capela will play the 5 as he always has, so the question is whether Sengun can play the 4:
Luckily, he can.
He already proved that alongside Steven Adams. It felt unrealistic at first. Surely Sengun wasn't quick-footed enough to play next to another big?
We were wrong. Sengun uses his quick instincts to land in the right positions. He's able to defend at the level. When he's playing with Capela, Capela will handle the backline as he has throughout his whole career.
It won't look exactly like the Adams partnership. Capela is a great offensive rebounder, but Adams is the best in the NBA. The Rockets will dominate the glass with Capela and Sengun together, but not as thoroughly.
That said, Capela is the better rim protector. The defense should be stronger when Sengun pairs with him vs Adams. It'll be an interesting dynamic to watch, but Capela clearly understands the assignment.
As a result, every Rockets fan should be happy to have him back.
