This time last year, the Houston Rockets were hoping to sneak into the Play-In Tourmanet. Fast forward to the present, and their aspirations are much grander. They are in a four-team battle for the two seed in the Western Conference, and two more teams (the Golden State Warriors and Minnesota Timberwolves) are vying to be in that mix, too. But if they want their best shot in said race, they need to get healthy. And right now, that starts with Amen Thompson.
Thompson has been the breakout star of the Rockets this year. Alperen Sengun was an All-Star, but Thompson has the makings of that and so much more. However, the 22-year-old is dealing with an ankle injury that has held him out for the last five game.s
But Rockets fans may not have to wait much longer to see him back in action.
Amen Thompson will return from ankle injury very soon
During a recent episode of The Hoop Collective, ESPN’s Tim MacMahon said that Thompson will be back sometime in March.
“He’ll be back in March,” MacMahon said. “When exactly, I couldn’t tell you. But he’s not going to be out long.”
On top of that, Ime Udoka noted that Thompson could potentially even return as soon as Friday against the Miami Heat, as he will be traveling with the team on their two-game Florida road trip. Danielle Lerner of The Houston Chronicle reported the statement:
“If he does that, could be Miami, could be when we get back,” Udoka said. “Swelling has gone down, pain’s gone down. Flexibility, mobility has gone up, and he’s just got to go through a contact portion. Once he does that we’re going to see how he reacts to that and he’ll be good to go after. So hopefully, sooner than later.”
Thompson sprained his ankle on March 8 in a game against the New Orleans Pelicans, but now, it seems as though the injury is not going to linger.
This is exactly what Rockets fans have been eager to hear, as Thompson has been a crucial part of Houston’s success this season, and if they want to be competitive in the playoffs, they’ll need him at full strength.
Thompson’s defense and elite athleticism make him one of the most exciting young players in the league, and he’s quickly become a cornerstone of the franchise.
So far this season, Thompson is averaging 14.0 points, 8.3 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 1.3 steals, and 1.3 blocks while shooting 55.3% from the field and 25.6% from behind the three-point line.
