Some Houston Rockets fans lamented the team's choice to draft Jalen Green.

Evan Mobley was the presumptive favorite with the second overall pick. The Rockets went left. They seemingly decided that finding a lead guard was a higher priority than finding a defensive anchor at the onset of a rebuild.

They may feel their position has been justified. Mobley has been a more productive player than Green thus far. That said, it's been speculated that the Rockets wouldn't have targeted Alperen Sengun if they'd also drafted Mobley. Most Rockets fans would agree they'd prefer Sengun and Green over Mobley.

Besides - Mobley has been better than Green. Drafting him may have made it more difficult for the Rockets to tank toward Amen Thompson. Surely, any Rockets fan would prefer that trio to Mobley alone:

If any had any doubts, they were answered in Saturday night's contest with Mobley's Cavaliers.

Rockets trio shines vs elite team

Thompson had 23 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists. His teammates didn't slack either. Sengun delivered 26 points and 8 rebounds, while Green had 26 points and 4 assists.

By contrast, Mobley was largely ineffective. He had 7 points and 8 rebounds. More broadly, he and Jarrett Allen struggled to contain Sengun all night. The defensive attention that he drew on the interior opened up the game for his teammates.

It's hard to overstate what's happening in Houston. This trio (along with 20 points and 6 assists from Fred VanVleet) just led the Rockets to a win over the team with the best record in the NBA.

They're giving their fans a taste of the future.

Rockets have found a big three

There have been questions about the fit between these three. Those questions were fair to pose. The combined three-point shooting between Sengun, Thompson, and Green is questionable.

It's worth noting that Green was 5/11 from deep against Cleveland. His volatile shooting has been the primary reason he's fallen behind Mobley and some of his other draft mates. When Green is connecting from three, he's as potent an offensive player as you'll find from the 2021 draft.

Green isn't the only one of these guys with question marks. Time will tell whether Sengun can defend in the postseason, or whether Thompson's shooting will cost the Rockets. Here's one question that can't be asked anymore:

Are each of these guys potential stars?

The answer is a resounding yes. The Rockets have other intriguing young players. Jabari Smith Jr. and Tari Eason should compliment anybody, and we'll see what comes of Reed Sheppard and Cam Whitmore. As of now, it looks like the Rockets' future revolves around Green, Sengun, and Thompson:

Sorry, Evan Mobley fans.
