Ime Udoka's coaching blunders have cost the Rockets another playoff game, and his exit from the franchise seem imminent now. The Rockets may have plenty of other excuses for their 3-0 deficit, but Udoka has seemingly coached his way off the team. The historic nature of their Game 3 collapse puts a lot of blame on Udoka's shoulders and forces the front office to reconsider his position on the team.
Ime Udoka is a problem for the Rockets
The Rockets were likely already questioning their future with Udoka after the first two games of this series, but it should be solidified after Game 3. Not only did the Rockets lose to go down 3-0 against a short-handed Lakers team, but they did so with a collapse that is rarely seen in NBA playoff history. They blew a 6 point lead in the last 30 seconds of the game, becoming just the second playoff team
NBA teams were 1713-1 when leading by 6 or more in the last 30 sec of regulation in the playoffs in the last 29 years.

They are now 1713-2. Rockets are the 2nd team in 29 years to blow a 6+ point lead in the final 30 seconds of regulation, joining the 2024 Knicks. https://t.co/HLM8dOxuDM
This meltdown was only possible because of multiple Houston turnovers from their young players in the fourth quarter's final moments. Without any solidified veterans on the court, the Rockets panicked and literally threw the game away on crucial possessions. But even with their inexperience, the Rockets should be guided by their head coach to secure the ball for an easy win with everything in their favor.
On two consecutive plays, the Rockets had turnovers before even reaching halfcourt. Obviously the players should have been more careful with the ball, but the coaching should have also set them up better to finish out the win. Their play design, even after timeouts, did not give sufficient support and pressure release outlets for their ball handlers to advance the ball.
Afterwards, Udoka chose to criticize his players rather than uplifting them and taking accountability himself. A great coach in this situation would defend his players in front of the national media and support them to improve behind the scenes. But Udoka did the opposite; instead he said,
"Horrendous mistakes, I don't know if you want to say youth or scared of the moment."
The Rockets desperately need a coaching change
As the playoffs continue, Houston's need for new leadership becomes clearer each game. Udoka seems incapable of making the necessary adjustments and advanced strategies to win playoff games against a formidable opponent. He has been unable to maximize his roster this season, and especially this postseason, because of his own shortcomings.
The Rockets have reached a crossroads as a franchise and need to make some tough calls if they want to eventually compete for a title. Their first step could easily be finding an upgrade at head coach after Ime Udoka has worn out his welcome.
