It took just one game to remind the Rockets they were right to trade Cam Whitmore

While Whitmore did not play particularly poorly, he would not have been ready to make an impact on this Rockets' roster.

As the Houston Rockets came away with the blowout victory, ..., over the Washington Wizards, the team looked yet again like a championship-caliber offensive squad, hitting shots from all over the court and dominating the boards with ease for most of the night.

Yet, a somewhat obscure storyline, the return of Cam Whitmore to Houston for the first time with his new team, yielded further reflection on the controversial trade that the organization made this past offseason, and, decidedly, it seems as though they made the right decision.

Whitmore, admittedly, did not perform all that poorly on the night. Through 25 minutes on the court, he posted 11 points, three rebounds and one assist, shooting 5-of-9 from the floor and 1-of-2 from 3-point range.

Yet, in a relatively limited role on a bottom-feeding Washington team, Whitmore showed the Rockets that he would not have been ready to take on a larger role on a team whose timeline has been rapidly accelerated over the past few months.

While the Rockets might have gotten a better return for Whitmore, they ultimately made the right decision

Through his first two seasons in Houston, Whitmore showed flashes of potential as a dynamic scorer from the small forward position, averaging 10.8 points and shooting 35.7% from 3-point range through his 98 games with the organization.

Yet, with the depth that the Rockets already had at the position, they decided this past offseason that it was time to move on from Whitmore, dealing him to the Wizards for two second-round picks.

This is not a claim that Whitmore is outright a bad player. In fact, his recent performances apart from this game would indicate the opposite. In his two appearances prior to his matchup against Houston, Whitmore averaged 19.5 points, 2.5 rebounds and 0.5 assists while shooting 54.2% from the field.

After an up-and-down start to his season, and a viral moment that put the contentious beginnings to his relationship with Washington's coaching staff on full display, Whitmore seems to have found his footing with his new team, and it will be exciting to see if he is able to live up to his potential given a new opportunity.

Nevertheless, the harsh reality still remains. With Kevin Durant on the roster, this team is undeniably in win-now mode, and they would not have had the time nor the room in their rotation to see out the ups and the downs in Whitmore's performance.

The Wizards do, and that is why they represent the perfect place for a player such as Whitmore.
