As the Houston Rockets prepare to enter the 2025-26 NBA season, they will be heavily reliant upon the historical scoring ability of their new star, Kevin Durant, in order to elevate their offense to championship levels.
Now, in the new season of Starting 5 on Netflix, Hall of Fame journalist Marc Spears has given fans the perfect description of Durant's offensive game, describing him as one of the most graceful scorers the game has ever seen.
"Every time I watch him play, I'm in awe. I think, offensively, he's the most beautiful player the NBA's ever seen. If you put his highlights to classical music, it would actually look good."Marc Spears, 'Starting 5' S2:E1
Kevin Durant is one of the most beautiful scorers the game has ever seen
As the Rockets pulled the trigger on their blockbuster trade for Durant this offseason, they knew that they were accelerating their timeline rapidly, acquiring one of the most lethal and effective shooters in the league right now.
Yet, it is easy to forget that, at age 37, Durant is still playing at almost the highest level of his career, and, if this longevity holds, the move could be considered one of the greatest gambles we've seen in recent memory.
Last season, through 62 games with the Phoenix Suns, Durant averaged 26.6 points, six rebounds and 4.2 assists while shooting 43% from beyond the arc.
His unique combination of height, reach and splendid step-back and fadeaway ability means that, even as his explosiveness has diminished somewhat, he has still be able to rely upon his smooth touch and his understanding of his spots on the court to remain a highly effective scorer.
In the two preseason games in which Durant played for Houston, this skill-set was on full display, with Durant cooking defenders both in the mid-range and on his drives to the basket, showing off an athletic skill-set that few players of his age in the league have ever possessed.
While the new season of Starting 5 allowed fans to get up-close-and-personal with Durant as he went through the turmoil of the end of his tenure in Phoenix, it also granted fans the gift of hearing a number of unique perspectives on his game and his place in NBA history.
Spears, in describing the serenity and pure smoothness with which Durant operates, gave perhaps the best description of his game we've ever heard, and it serves as a reminder for Rockets fans of just how excited they should be to have this legend on their team.
