The Houston Rockets will be looking for upgrades this offseason after a disappointing playoff run. The biggest player likely to switch teams this offseason is 10-time All-Star Giannis Antetokounmpo.
Giannis Antetokounmpo may be traded soon
A potential trade for the Bucks' superstar could happen within the next couple of weeks. NBA insiders Marc Stein and Jake Fischer recently reported that there is a growing expectation throughout the NBA that the Milwaukee Bucks will trade the franchise player before the NBA Draft.
Houston’s front office is reportedly out on the idea of making a huge splash for Antetokounmpo. They should reconsider that stance.
Giannis Antetokounmpo is one of the true superstars capable of leading a team to a championship. At this point in his career, Kevin Durant is no longer in that class. Rockets fans are hoping Alperen Sengun and Amen Thompson can eventually rise to that ceiling, but the reality is that both players still have limitations that make that far from guaranteed.
This team needs a player of Antetokounmpo’s caliber, and they are running out of time to make a move for him.
Without question, there is a large amount of risk attached to trading for the former MVP. Since winning the championship in 2021, he has been repeatedly injured at the end of the season and in the playoffs. He is also turning 32 years old next season and has a playstyle that depends heavily on athleticism.
Antetokounmpo is worth the risk
Despite the risks, a core of Antetokounmpo, Durant, Thompson, and Sengun would be among the best in the league. Even if Alperen Sengun has to be in the potential trade, it would still be worth pulling the trigger.
Sengun is a phenomenal young player, but there are still questions about whether his flaws will prevent him from being a core piece on a championship team. It usually is not smart to trade a young ascending All-Star for an aging one, but this circumstance could very well be an exception.
It looks like NBA fans are going to soon find out where the next chapter of Giannis’ career will take place. Time will tell if that will be in Houston.
