LeBron James signing with the 76ers saved the Rockets from a difficult situation

Hoping and dreaming of big-name free agents is a part of every NBA offseason. However, Rockets fans who dreamed of LeBron James wearing the ketchup and mustard jerseys should be happy that dream did not come true. LeBron James is one of the greatest players to ever play the game, but he does not fit with this iteration of the Houston Rockets.

LeBron James was not a fit with this young core

The Rockets have a unique combination of young players and proven veterans. While adding LeBron James would have been exciting, his arrival could have created complications for Houston’s long-term plans.

The last time James joined a team with a young core filled with promise, things did not work out well for that group. In the 2019 offseason, LeBron James was 33 years old and coming off 11 straight seasons finishing top-four in MVP voting.

He joined the Los Angeles Lakers with young players such as Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram, Kyle Kuzma, and Josh Hart. After a frustrating season filled with trade rumors surrounding the young players, Lonzo Ball, Josh Hart, and Brandon Ingram were all included in the trade package that landed Anthony Davis.

Now, LeBron James is eight years older and is no longer a perennial MVP candidate. He is still an All-Star-level player, but he is not quite the same player he once was.

LeBron James entering a locker room with Amen Thompson, Alperen Sengun, Reed Sheppard, Jabari Smith Jr., and Tari Eason could have created difficult decisions for Houston’s front office.

After spending years rebuilding to acquire those exciting young players, the last thing Rockets fans should want is a situation where the team feels pressured to make win-now moves that could prematurely break up the young core. Rafael Stone has been clear that even with a 37-year-old Kevin Durant on the roster, he is unwilling to make potentially short-sighted moves in pursuit of a championship.

Kevin Durant and LeBron James might not have been a great fit

Speaking of Kevin Durant, James and Durant on the same team would have been an interesting experience. Both players are two of the greatest basketball players of all time, but they also have a history of putting strain on their respective locker rooms.

Their on-court abilities have more than made up for any potential locker room concerns throughout their careers, but having both Durant and James on the same team may have been too much for any locker room to handle.

Not to mention, Durant and James have been rivals since Durant entered the league in 2007. Although the two have tremendous respect for each other, it is possible Durant would not have wanted to join forces with James at this stage of his career.

LeBron James has a history with Ime Udoka

Finally, LeBron James has a notable history with Rockets head coach Ime Udoka. A few years ago, Udoka and James exchanged words during a regular-season game, resulting in James receiving a technical foul and Udoka being ejected. The two have not exactly been known as close friends since that moment.

Beyond that altercation, Udoka has developed a reputation as a demanding coach who expects maximum effort from his players. Kevin Durant just played his most minutes in a season in 12 years, while LeBron James has famously managed his regular-season workload more carefully as he has gotten older.

Those different approaches, combined with their previous history, could have created some tension between two strong personalities throughout the season.

Taking everything into consideration, it is no surprise Houston never showed a significant amount of interest in signing LeBron James. He is one of the greatest players in NBA history, but he was never the right fit for this Rockets team.
