The Houston Rockets have one of the best wing rotations in the NBA. A new list suggests that they're deeper than anyone else in that area.
HoopsHype just published a list of the NBA's top 26 power forwards. The Rockets were heavily featured. The team had three representatives in these rankings:
That's more than any other team in the NBA.
Rockets are well represented on new list
The list kicks off with Tari Eason at 26th. Dorian Finney-Smith clocks in at 24th, and Jabari Smith Jr. rounds out the (Rockets on) the list at 17th.
HoopsHype is not infallible. Nobody is. Some Rockets fans will quibble with these rankings. If you've been watching this team, you're unlikely to rank Smith Jr. ahead of Eason.
Perhaps the list is factoring injury history into its criteria. Either way, the broader point is that the Rockets have three players on this list. The Nuggets and Blazers have two apiece, and no other team has more than one. That alone speaks volumes:
But the Rockets who were absent from this list say even more.
Rockets have a surplus of wing talent
Is Kevin Durant a power forward? How about Amen Thompson?
Per BasketballReference, Durant spent 68% of his minutes at the 4 in 2024-25. Thompson spent just 29% of his time there, but he's certainly an option at the position.
That's not to knock HoopsHype for excluding either. Thompson wouldn't be classified as a power forward. Durant could be, but he's expected to start at the 3 in 2025-26.
The point is that the Rockets have 5 players who they can play at the 4 who would otherwise be on this list. Durant would likely usurp Pascal Siakam for the number two spot (Giannis Antetokounmpo would retain pole position). If you wanted to include Thompson, he'd arguably knock Aaron Gordon from the 11th position. No team has as much wing depth:
That's great news if you're a Rockets fan.
Rockets are well-equipped for the modern NBA
A platoon of rangy forwards who can guard multiple positions? Sign me up.
The Rockets' roster isn't perfect. This team could use more ball-handling. We'll see if Amen Thompson is ready for third option duties behind Durant and Alperen Sengun.
Still, they're going to play to their strengths. The Rockets should be a defensive powerhouse in 2025-26. They've got the best wing depth in the league:
