3 Key takeaways from the Houston Rockets' first 2 Summer League games
3. AJ Griffin continues to struggle
It's not all rainbows and butterflies - even if it is Summer League. AJ Griffin has been cold. Not cold like the Funky Cold Medina either. Cold like...well, winter.
Against the Lakers, he went for 8 points on 2/7 shooting in 15 minutes. Against the Wizards, he was given a longer runway with 31 minutes of playing time. Griffin responded with 12 points on 5/16 shooting from the field.
He's a confounding player. Griffin was a potential lottery pick at Duke two years ago, but an injury held back his draft stock. He's never looked the same. Griffin doesn't seem to have any ability to create on the ball, and his three-pointer is less consistent than once advertised.
Defensively, he's stiff. In other words, it's hard to identify Griffin's calling card as an NBA player. What will he do that keeps him on an NBA floor - especially if he's struggling in Summer League?
The Rockets' future may be bright, but whether Griffin is part of it is still to be determined.
