Ranking every player acquisition the Houston Rockets have made this summer
2. AJ Griffin
Another young player with injury concerns. Are we sensing a trend?
Well, the trend ends here. Still, it does feel like the Rockets are willing to take a gamble on young, injury-prone, talented players. The Rockets flipped the No. 44 pick in the draft for Griffin - they basically got him for free.
If they get the 2022-23, rookie version of Griffin, that trade could pay dividends. Griffin connected on 39% of his 3.6 three-point attempts per game during that season. A Rockets team in dire need of floor spacing will hope that's more indicative of his potential than the 25.6% he shot on 2.0 attempts per game in his 2023-24 sophomore year.
Griffin's reputation as a defender is mixed. Still, at 6'6" with a 7'0" wingspan, Griffin at least has the potential to be a distinct positive on that end. If anyone can draw a strong performance out of him, we suspect that it's Ime Udoka.
Whether Griffin can get on the floor is another story. He's either a 2 or a 3, but the Rockets have ample talent at both positions. Still, injuries occur. Griffin has an opportunity to prove that he's a vital part of this team's young core moving forward.
