Why the Rockets do the deal

For the Rockets, this isn't a bad deal at all. For starters, there have been questions regarding Jae'Sean Tate's ability to get minutes in a crowded rotation. And his inability to shoot has oftentimes been the cause of awful spacing.

And the Rockets added a significantly better defender in Dillon Brooks, who also isn't exactly a marksman from deep. Do they really want his reserve being another inefficient shooter?

Now I'm sure the amount of picks shelled out in this deal is giving you sticker shock, but let's face it. The Rockets don't care about second-round picks. We saw that this summer.

And even if they did, this is about what they'd have to give up to get a team to agree to take on Porter, considering the optics of acquiring a player who is alleged to have committed such an atrocity. This would be well worth it for the Rockets, as it would give them Brogdon, a 30-year-old vet who made 44 percent of his long-range attempts last season while also averaging 14.9 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 3.7 assists as a reserve for the Boston Celtics.

Why Portland does the deal

Let's be honest here. The Blazers won't get a package of four second-round picks in exchange for Brogdon from any other team.

The Rockets have to pay that price to essentially offset the Kevin Porter Jr. tax. And the Blazers have decided to rebuild, so they'd value the draft compensation.

Another component of rebuilding is taking on veterans and flipping them later for more draft compensation, which they could also do with Tate. But Blazers GM Joe Cronin could also decide to keep Tate, as he's a consumate professional and has proven to be capable of leading a team of youngsters both on and off the court.

Tate's hustle and relentless effort and energy would also be beneficial for a rebuilding franchise to see. And again, they'd cut Porter. It will be a rather daunting task for Cronin and the Blazers to find a better deal for Brogdon.
