There was a time when some people felt that Kevin Porter Jr. was the future of the Houston Rockets.

Those days are gone. Porter Jr. just signed a new contract with the Clippers. Yet, a tremendous amount has happened between his tenure with the Rockets and his new deal.

Specifically, Porter Jr. was charged with assault and strangulation. His then-girlfriend Kysre Gondrezick accused Porter Jr. of punching her in the face multiple times - although, she has since retracted those accusations.

It seems that the NBA intends to investigate the situation regardless.

Former Houston Rockets guard will be subject to investigation

The NBA has no reason to investigate Porter Jr. if he isn't in the NBA.

Most recently, he's been playing professionally in Greece. Following the allegations, the Rockets traded Porter Jr. to the Thunder, who subsequently waived him. Porter Jr. sought to play professionally overseas while waiting for an NBA opportunity.

Now, he's found one. The Clippers signed Porter Jr. to a two-year deal, with a player option on the second season.

So, the league is rightfully investigating him again.

Former Houston Rockets guard will have to earn the NBA's trust

We are not lawyers. We are only speculating here.

Our hunch is, given that Gondrezick has walked back her allegations, Porter Jr. won't face any barriers in returning to the NBA. He's likely to suit up for the Clippers next season.

Morality is complicated. This isn't the first similar allegation that's been leveled at Porter Jr. Whatever happened in that hotel room, it's obvious that he has deep personal issues he needs to tend to.

One could argue that he deserves a second chance. On the other hand, one could argue that this is his third or fourth chance. Either way, Porter Jr. is seemingly set to return to the NBA.

We'll see what he makes of the opportunity.
