As the Houston Rockets have come into their own this season, settling at a 6-3 record and putting together one of the best offensive fronts in the league, young guard Reed Sheppard's enhanced performance has been a pleasant surprise for those concerned with his ability to take on his new role.
Yet, according to Kevin O'Connor, on the recent episode of The Kevin O'Connor Show, the best is still yet to come, and, given Sheppard's hot shooting as of late, there will be a game soon where he wakes the league up to his enormous potential.
"Reed Sheppard is going to have one of those games where he drops 30. It's gonna happen. It's inevitable... That's what I think is really going to get people's attention."Kevin O'Connor
Sheppard, over his past few games, has clearly found his footing in his new role, and, once his hot shooting starts to pay dividends with increased touches, he will finally get the chance to show everyone what he is capable of.
Reed Sheppard is in line for a 30-point game, and only Rockets fans know how close he is to breaking loose
Heading into the season, the devastating injury that starting point guard Fred VanVleet suffered was, justifiably, a cause for major concern with the Rockets' offensive ceiling.
Not only would they be missing their leader and primary offensive facilitator, but their lack of backcourt depth meant that Amen Thompson and Sheppard would need to step into entirely new roles in order to fill that void.
While Sheppard struggled to start the season, looking inefficient on offense and, at times, like a serious target on the defensive end, he has since found his stride. Over his last five games, Sheppard has averaged 12.2 points, 1.2 rebounds and three assists while shooting 57.7% from 3-point range.
Yet, in those games, he has averaged just eight field goal attempts, meaning that there is a night in the near future where a scorching hot start to the game will leave an opportunity open for him to earn both extensive minutes and increased touches.
Although, in an ideal scenario, the Rockets would hope that Sheppard is ready to take on starting point guard duties by the end of the season, his ability to shoot consistently from beyond the arc is arguably more important to the team's success.
So far this season, the potential that Houston saw him when they drafted him third overall has begun to manifest, and it is only a matter of time until the league as a whole is awoken by a monster performance from the young guard.
