Rockets' Alperen Sengun is the perfect teammate for Kevin Durant

The Houston Rockets acquired one of the best scorers in NBA history in Kevin Durant. They're pairing him with one of the most natural teammates he's ever had in Alperen Sengun.

That's high praise. Durant has played with some of the best players in NBA history. This is a man who's partnered with Steph Curry, James Harden, Russell Westbrook, Kyrie Irving, and Devin Booker.

That's quite the resume. Still, out of that whole list, only one player is as natural of a fit alongside Durant as Sengun:

And even then, Sengun might have an edge.

Sengun's skillset complements Durant perfectly

Let's start by talking about how a star best complements Durant.

The key is to pressure the rim. Durant is arguably the most dangerous jump shooter in NBA history, so his co-star ought to stretch the defense by drawing them into the paint.

By that logic, Irving and Booker were his worst-fitting co-stars. Booker, in particular, always felt like a questionable pairing: At least Irving was part of a star trio with Durant.

On that note, Harden would have been a great co-star for Durant in his prime. When he was carrying the Rockets, Harden was an elite rim pressurer. In Brooklyn, his athleticism began to decline. Harden began to transition into a game that relied more on shooting and passing than driving. He's effective to this day, but his offensive profile has somewhat changed.

Durant and Curry were wildly successful together, but it had less to do with fit than it did with overwhelming talent. When you pair the two best shooters in NBA history, you're going to win games.

That leaves Sengun and Westbrook...

Rockets' duo is going to carry them far

If you think "Westbrook" as soon as you hear "rim pressure", that's valid. Few players in NBA history have had as much success driving the basketball as the former MVP.

Moreover, Sengun is not generally playing at peak Westbrook's level. That's an exceedingly high bar. That said, you could make the case that he's the best-fitting co-star Durant has ever had.

Mostly, that has to do with off-ball value. Sengun isn't an elite off-ball weapon - he's best with the ball in his hands. That said, he can screen for Durant in a way that Westbrook couldn't. That might not be much, but it's something that helps to diversify their two-man game.

This is a duo with perfect synergy. They each operate from different places on the floor and put defenses in a bind. It's a large reason why the Rockets have an NBA-best 126.5 Offensive Rating:

Who knows how far this duo can carry them?
