The NBA Las Vegas Summer League is about to get underway. For NBA fans, this is the first time they have an opportunity to see their drafted rookies wearing their favourite team’s colours. For Houston Rockets fans, that player is Bruce Thornton. What should Rockets fans look for from the No. 31 pick in this past draft?

Thornton will be charged with more playmaking responsibilities

In college, Thornton operated as a scoring guard. He showed plenty of playmaking ability, but it was not his primary role. Measuring at 6’0” tall with a 6’5” wingspan, Thornton will likely need to be an effective point guard to succeed on this Rockets team. That means playmaking will have to become a larger part of his game.

Summer League will be his first opportunity to show this fanbase that he can handle being a lead guard. Fans should look for the ball to be in Thornton’s hands as much as possible. His responsibility will be to initiate the team’s offense in Summer League and get his feet wet before potentially moving into a limited backup role during the regular season.

Look for Thornton to showcase his shooting range

The second thing Rockets fans should look for is his outside shooting touch. Thornton developed into a great shooter in college.

His three-point shooting is no doubt a big part of the reason why Houston traded up in the draft to select him. Even if Thornton struggles to adjust to the lead guard role, he could still showcase what would make him a valuable NBA contributor if he can consistently knock down his outside shots.

Overall, it may be hard for Thornton to find consistent minutes in his rookie season. Like most undersized rookie guards, he will most likely struggle on defense. He also may struggle adapting to playmaking at the NBA level. None of that should surprise Rockets fans. Second-round picks often struggle early in their careers.

This Summer League is a good chance for Rockets fans to see Thornton in an expanded role. It may be the only opportunity for fans to see Thornton play extended minutes all season.
