On Friday, NBA insider Jake Fischer reported that rival teams believe the Houston Rockets "are likely" to explore trade options involving the No. 10 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft for "win-now talent" (subscription required).
Houston finished with the second-best record in the West, but came up short against Golden State in the first round, losing in seven games. The Rockets have the draft assets and young talent to pursue a trade over the summer, but there isn't a significant push for the organization to make a move.
Two stars that could hit the trade market this summer are Giannis Antetokounmpo and Kevin Durant. ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania reported that Giannis is "open-minded" about leaving Milwaukee, but to be clear, the superstar hasn't requested a trade. Neither has Durant, but Phoenix listened to offers for him before the deadline, and needs to make a trade to give the team some room to breathe financially.
The Rockets have one of the best defenses in the league under Ime Udoka, but their lack of a go-to scorer was even more painfully evident in the postseason. Houston is already a threat in the league's strongest conference, but the team could become an even bigger problem if it adds a star-level talent over the summer.
Rockets could trade No. 10 pick for "win-now talent"
Houston would be a threat for years with Giannis, but a trade would mean the Rockets breaking up their young core and giving up a slew of picks. However, a superstar still in his prime doesn't always become available, so if he does, it's something the front office will need to consider.
Durant is nearing the end of his career, but he'd give Houston the go-to scorer it needs. It wouldn't cost nearly as much for the Rockets to get KD as Giannis. Based on what The Athletic reported, though, Houston is skeptical about trading for Durant because of his age (subscription required). He'll turn 37 before the start of the 2025-26 season.
Maybe the Rockets won't trade for a star, but will go after an impactful role player instead. Who could that player be? It's still too early to tell.
The first round of the draft is 40 days away, and a lot could happen between now and then. Trade rumors and speculation will ramp up as the draft draws nearer. Maybe Houston will cash in the pick as part of a larger trade. If the right deal materializes, good luck to the rest of the West!
