In Kevin Durant’s 18th season, he continues to set records. He was just honoured with the 12th All-NBA selection of his career while playing for the Houston Rockets.
Houston is the fifth franchise Durant has played for, and he has now made an All-NBA Team with all five. That is an NBA record. Durant was previously tied with Chris Paul after making an All-NBA Team with four different franchises.
Durant continues to add to his legacy
Durant’s ability to be great no matter where he plays should add to his legacy. He played on a homegrown Thunder team, an all-time Warriors team, a Brooklyn team cursed with locker room turmoil, a dysfunctional Suns team and now this version of the Houston Rockets. He has been great in every stop.
Many people will point out that most of the all-time greats did not play for five different franchises. That is fair, but it does not take away from his record.
By their age-37 seasons, almost no Hall of Famer was still good enough to make an All-NBA Team, let alone the All-NBA Second Team. Durant is officially becoming one of the longest-tenured NBA superstars of all time.
At this stage in his career, there is nothing Durant has left to accomplish. He is an MVP, a four-time scoring champion, a two-time champion, a two-time Finals MVP and fifth in career points in NBA history.
The only thing some people will point to is that he was never the bona fide best player on a championship team, sharing his two championships with Stephen Curry. Although there is some truth to that, no one should allow it to take away from Durant’s greatness. Without Durant, those Warriors teams would have been great, but they would not have become the all-time powerhouse fans remember them as.
The Rockets added more than a big name
Rockets fans should be overjoyed that Durant was able to accomplish this feat while wearing their jersey. If Alperen Sengun and Amen Thompson continue to improve, then Durant’s experience and All-NBA-level talent could help elevate this team into true championship contention.
Durant being selected to an All-NBA Team with a record fifth franchise is more than another achievement. It is a reminder that the Rockets did not just add a big name near the end of his career. They added one of the greatest scorers in NBA history, a player who is still performing at an elite level and a superstar who can help significantly raise the ceiling for this team.
