Rockets fans should rethink Kevin Durant criticism after All-NBA selection

Rockets fans should not focus only on Durant’s flaws, but should appreciate his greatness after his All-NBA selection

The All-NBA votes are in, and one Houston Rocket made an All-NBA Team: Kevin Durant. The future Hall of Famer has officially been honored with the 12th All-NBA selection of his career, becoming the 13th player to accomplish that feat.

After a disappointing end to the season, many Rockets fans have been quick to point out Durant's flaws. He may be too old to lead a team to an NBA championship, his only past championship success came on a stacked Warriors team, and he is a questionable leader and mentor for Houston’s young core.

Kevin Durant is still giving Rockets fans elite production

Those concerns all have at least some merit, but this All-NBA selection should be a reminder to Houston fans who they have on their team: Kevin freaking Durant.

He may not be quite the player who averaged 29.3 points per game through his age 21-25 seasons or the player who won back-to-back Finals MVPs, but he is still an elite player in the league.

Watching Durant this season, it was surreal that he was a Houston Rocket. Instead of focusing only on Durant’s flaws, Rockets fans should be celebrating everything he could still accomplish wearing a Houston Rockets jersey.

Kevin Durant is adding to his legacy in Houston

In his first season in Houston, Durant passed Michael Jordan to become the fifth-most prolific scorer in NBA history. Next year, he has a chance to pass Kobe Bryant.

These are also the final years NBA fans have to watch Durant chase another championship in the playoffs. He was not healthy this postseason, but fans across the league will still watch Rockets playoff games just to see if Durant can add to his trophy collection.

This Second Team All-NBA selection is proof that Durant is not just a legacy name. He is still one of the best players in the league, and he is reaching these milestones in Houston. The Rockets traded for Durant because they still believed in his ability to help a team win. This All-NBA selection is validation that Houston made the right move. 

After a disappointing playoff exit, Rockets fans have every right to question what comes next. But they should also recognize what is right in front of them. Kevin Durant is still Kevin Durant, and he is doing this in a Rockets jersey.
