The Houston Rockets have been fairly durable during the 2024-25 season.

Jalen Green is an ironman - he seldom misses time. Alperen Sengun has had some minor ailments, but he's mostly been available. Amen Thompson is reliable. The Rockets have typically been playing with a full deck of cards:

Until recently.

Against the Knicks on Monday, they were down three of their typical five starters. It showed. Without Fred VanVleet, Jabari Smith Jr. and Sengun, the Rockets struggled.

Short-handed Rockets put up a fight

This young team should have their heads held high after this contest. There is nothing to be ashamed of.

Besides the 46 points they gave up in the fourth quarter, that is. Ime Udoka rightfully lambasted his club for that effort. Still, it's worth noting that the Rockets were playing small against a team with a star big for much of this contest. A switch-heavy defensive scheme is especially taxing, and by the final frame, the Rockets looked taxed.

There are silver linings. Amen Thompson functioned as the point guard in VanVleet's absence and flashed some impressive ability to generate offense in the halfcourt. He had 25 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists. His star is shining brighter with every signature performance.

Jalen Green's performance was mixed. He had 21 points on a passable 9/22 shooting from the field, but his 1/8 mark from long-range left much to be desired. Still, if Sengun had been available, the Rockets would have had another dynamic offensive option on the floor. That could have been a blessing for Green's efficiency, and it certainly would have helped the Rockets win.

When they get reinforcements, they'll get back to their winning ways.

Rockets will regroup soon

Jabari Smith Jr.'s absence has been felt. The Rockets' Defensive Rating of 115.4 over the last 15 games ranks 21st in the NBA. That's been their calling card throughout the season. Now, they're without a clear identity.

Smith Jr. will help. His length and mobility allow the Rockets to deploy Sengun at the level instead of putting him in drop coverage, where he suffers. Amen Thompson has stepped up in Smith Jr.'s absence, but the best version of this Rockets team has that duo sharing the forward spots in the starting lineup.

Still, Sengun's absence is perhaps even more glaring. He's been the Rockets' primary playmaker in 2024-25. Luckily, he's only listed as day-to-day. All told, the Rockets have still had injury luck this year:

Even if it feels like it's starting to run out.
