The Houston Rockets have shrugged off a slow start to the season and jumped out to a 10-3 record, good for third in the Western Conference. As they seek to level up even more, there's one very obvious thing that the Rockets need to do: shoot more threes.
This isn't a problem most NBA teams have in this day and age. But as of this writing, Houston ranks first in the league in three-point percentage with a 42.3% efficiency mark. But at the same time, they're shockingly 30th (dead last) in three-point attempts per game, getting up just 29.8 attempts a night.
Of course, this just seems absurd to even think about. The good thing is, there's a clear and obvious fix: start getting more three-point attempts up. If you're elite in efficiency, you simply have to increase your volume. Generating those attempts is easier said than done, but it does have to be done.
The Rockets need to shoot more three-pointers
Even if you're an efficient three-point shooting team, history tends to favor squads who shoot both high percentages and get up sufficient volume. Should the Rockets continue playing things safe and keep their attempts at a conservative number, other teams are going to gain an advantage against them over time simply by taking more shots.
This is especially true when talking about the playoffs. In the regular season, you can get away with taking fewer shots from three if you're making a lot of them. Once April and May come around, Houston's advantage will have the potential to disappear if they don't decide to lean more into volume.
The Rockets need to slightly shift their mentality when it comes to their shot diet. It's not necessarily always about taking the best threes, sometimes you just need to take enough threes, especially in the regular season. Making this shift will require coaching emphasis, play design tweaks, and buy-in from players who might be comfortable with the current volume.
Of course, the silver lining here is that having the best three-point rate is a solid foundation to build on. Houston already knows it can knock down shots at an elite level, and leaning further into that strength will certainly elevate an already impressive offense. If the Rockets fully embrace this identity as the season progresses, they're likely to find themselves finishing near the top of the standings, and primed for a deep postseason run.
